Subject matter

I was just reading a little of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, since I watched the movie recently and hadn't read the book for some time. In it, she writes that Mrs. Allen, a fairly silly woman, was "never satisfied with the day unless she spent the chief of it by the side of Mrs. Thorpe, in what they called conversation; but in which there was scarcely ever any exchange of opinion, and not often any resemblance of subject, for Mrs. Thorpe talked chiefly of her children, and Mrs. Allen of her gowns." I had to chuckle as I saw myself in Mrs. Thorpe. What did I talk about before I had kids? I surely had something of interest to say (or write about) back then, didn't I? Well, on to stories about my kids...

Tori woke up crying a few nights ago, apparently with a bad dream. Then for the last couple of days, she has been crawling into her closet and falling asleep during her nap time. There is no room in there, and it can't be comfortable, but she says she's scared of Scrat (Ice Age) and I guess she feels safer in there. We've tried to tell her that Scrat is nice and she agrees. She always says, "If I see him, I'll just hug him," but then I find her in the closet.

Whenever we go for walks, Tori will see dandelions and say, "Mama, there's your favorite flower!" over and over. I don't know where that came from, but I can't disagree now. Eli will sometimes say, "But your favorite, favorite flowers are the little purple ones," which might be true. Mom and Dad have little purple flowers (violets?) that grow in their grass in the early spring, and there is not a more beautiful smell in the world. That and the smell of lilacs. Spring wouldn't be complete for me without smelling those two kinds of flowers.

Jonah has started giving us, and stuffed animals, loves by laying his head down on us and making an "Mmmmmm" sound. (Oh, he also does it to the cat, but he kind of climbs up on her and smooshes her in the process. She is the epitome of patience. Although she's not too bright, because she never moves away. Just meows sadly.)

That is so funny that she sleeps in the closet. At least you know she is there because one time our neighbors lost their child and we looked and looked through the whole neighborhood and then she was found asleep in the closet.

Sometimes it seems like Greg and I can have complete "conversations" where I only talk about babies and he only talks about computers.

Tori seems like such a fun girl and Jonah seems so sweet and loving! I wish we lived closer and could get to know your kids better. I am so glad that you write little stories about them though, to give a glimpse into their personalities.

I think it is funny because kids are always supposed to be afraid of what's in the closet . . . not what's out of the closet. O-well, at least she's sleeping!
