Our Jonah-buddy

Jonah's kindergarten class hatched baby chicks. He absolutely loved them. His little writing assignments were always about the chicks. "Today 25 chicks hacht. I am ecsided. They r cut." Apparently his seat was by their little incubator/cage, and he couldn't stop looking at them. We have considered raising chickens before, so we talked to his teacher and arranged to get some from her for his birthday. She watched Jonah as the kids played with them to see which he liked best. John picked them up one day after school while I took the kids to the library, and he hid them in the basement. I worried that the chicks would be overheard, but no knew or guessed they were there. John built a nice large cage for them.  On the morning of Jonah's birthday, we took him out to the playroom when he woke up.  He was so excited and surprised.  He kept saying, "This is the best birthday ever!"  (But to be honest, he is pretty liberal with his superlatives like that.)  He named all seven of the chicks.  Let me see if I can remember: Blackie, Chick Frost, Snowy, Baby Chip, Chippy, Peanut, and Chipmunk.  (The last four had stripes like a chipmunk.)  I'll write more about the chicks later.
Jonah also got a couple of small Lego sets.

He had been saying for some time that he wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese for his birthday.  After school, we used a coupon and played the games.  I never get food there.

This was the hat Jonah wore in school.  He was wearing it proudly as he came off the bus after school.  He loves cheesecake, so I made one of those cheap package kinds.  It was a hit!

I love my Jonah.  He is always saying something funny.  He is a one-man wrecking crew.  Once in an inservice class, they talked about kids whose motto was "Ready, fire, aim!" and that's my Jonah.  He is so sweet and affectionate.  I usually hold him while he reads his school books to me, and I was just thinking the other day how cuddly he is - and how I just love the smell and feel of him.  Maybe that sounds odd, but it made me aware of how limited my snuggle time is with Jonah.  And all the kids.  (Tori still sits on my lap while she reads, too.)  Jonah often comes in to us at night, so I told him that he can only do that if he's had a bad nightmare or something.  So now he tells me every night that he's had a bad nightmare.  Little stinker. :)

Oh, when John went in to get the chicks, Jonah's teacher was raving about all of Jonah's positive attributes.  John said he thought to himself, "So Jonah's the sweetest, best-behaved, cutest, AND smartest?"  But of course he agreed.  Jonah's a keeper.

Sweet Jonah. And you are so kind to get him the chicks for his birthday. I can hardly imagine how excited he must have been to see them. It looks like the other kids love them too.
