I have a lot of summer activities to post about, but I'm just going to jump to our fun Independence Day! In the morning, we went to Watkins Glen. It is a state park in the Finger Lakes area that has beautiful waterfalls and shale rock formations. It was too crowded, but otherwise, really wonderful. (I want to go in the spring next year. Things have been a bit dry for a few weeks, and I bet it would have been even more impressive earlier.) We were going to swim at a pool there after, but I forgot John's swimming suit. So we got some ice cream and headed home.
| Eli took this picture for us. Maybe we'll come back for our 10th anniversary. |
I had planned to host a party with ward members, but as the time approached we found out that all fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in NY. Funny. Anyway, my friend, Shalissa, offered to have it at her house on the PA side of the border instead. We had five or six ward families, and it was so fun!! It felt like being with family. There was great food and a great fireworks display!
In addition to our fun fireworks that the men lit off, we had someone's real, full-sized fireworks going on behind from farther down the hill. (I don't know where they got them or how they could afford it....) And then above that, the lightning in the distance was lighting up the clouds. It all combined for one of the best shows I've seen in a while!

| Jonah and Maggie were scared of the sparklers at first, but they soon loved them. |
The cities around here mostly celebrated last Sat. but John got some gardening done that day. I am so grateful for the wonderful people we have around us here and for the fun times we're having.
