First Grade

Well, I made it through the first day of first grade. I know you may be thinking that it's really Eli we should be worried about, but he was as happy as he could be from beginning to end. I've been telling anyone who will listen (except Eli) that there is no reason to send kids to school for that long. My sister-in-law homeschooled her kids for a year while they were in transition between states and homes. She spent three hours a day, and they made much better progress than they would have in school. This is not a tirade against schools - I was a public school teacher. It's just that a lot of time is naturally wasted. Anyway...
Eli has been so excited for this day. He's mostly excited about school lunch, getting a locker, and staying until the afternoon. He had already met his teacher and thought she was really nice. Her name is Mrs. Edwards. She looks very young, but seems quite competent. This is her second year. I was pleased when we walked in to see that a boy from his class last year had transferred in, and a boy from our ward was there as well. (He's in the older primary class.) And then there was one other boy that he knew. So he sat by his friend Jett, and had no trouble with the idea of my leaving him. I, on the other hand, was fighting back tears the whole time. What a silly mom I am.

Oh, seeing those desks and things gave me that same tight feeling in my chest! I'm glad he seems so happy there though!

P.S. That is cool that they have lockers . . . my kids would feel like they were loooosers if they found out that some kids get lockers rather than "cubbies"
